How could we ever take this seriously? Millennials, the generation raised on Dunkaroos and 106 and Park, are now being labeled as an “aging” generation? It sounds like a joke, but actually there’s some truth to it. Yes, we are pushing 40 (some of us well past it), but this generation gave the world some of the best moments ever. Still, some might wonder how the ’90s could ever compare to other legendary generations before. A generation like the 60s, that birthed decades of soulful music, great fashion, and movements that changed the world. The soul of Motown, the power in black poetry, the pride in afros and natural beauty. The culture of the statements made during that time was such and still is a vibe. The creative influencers of the 60s, like Nina, Sidney, and James, literally built the culture from the ground up.
Let’s not sleep on Millennials because we have certainly made a name for ourselves. We kept flip phones in our back pockets and CDs in our visors. If we are being honest, half of us are still outside getting carded at brunch because we are defining the slogans, Forever Young and You Only Live Once (YOLO). Don’t get us started on our icons, Beyonce, Usher, and Lauryn Hill. They are still the best in the industry. The 90s and the 2000s were all about color, confidence, and creativity. Millennials are still carrying that energy, now just with a great skin care routine and a little back pain.
What matters is not to outshine other epic generations like the 60s, but to appreciate them. It is imperative to connect with the culture of previous generations and continue to build on the greatness, because the truth is, we don’t have to be frozen in time. Millennials are in a sweet spot, young enough to remember what life was like before everything went digital and old enough to teach the new wave of life how to make a creative culture. We carry the pieces of every era we’ve lived through, mixing vintage soul with modern swag. So sure, we might be the world’s next aging generation, but age is nothing but a number. We are still here, still creating and still shaping what comes next.
