How do you stay creative and motivated in your work?

Alisha LaVon: My clients are always bringing me inspiration pics or sending me reels for new things they want to try! There are so many different looks you can achieve by changing hair length, color, and texture. They motivate and inspire me to continue learning and growing.

What’s the biggest misconception people have about being a hairstylist?

Alisha LaVon: That job is fun and games all day and easy! The days can be very long, on your feet, working with a lot of personalities. While it is truly an enjoyable and rewarding career, it can be draining, both mentally and physically. Being good at doing hair isn’t enough! There are a lot of interpersonal skills required to be successful in this field and to build solid relationships with your clients

How do you help clients choose the best style for them?

Alisha LaVon: Helping my clients choose the best style for them often involves considering their lifestyle (gym, upkeep required, etc.), budget, face shape, to name a few things. It’s important to make sure my clients have a realistic expectation of the style and any maintenance required on their end before we decide on it.

How has the beauty industry changed since you started your career?

Alisha LaVon: 20 years ago, when I started, everyone was working at their booth in an open floor salon layout. Now and days, everyone has migrated to a salon suite. It has its pros and cons. I love the one-on-one attention and private experience I can offer my clients, but I love when other clients have a little overlap and can connect, talk, and laugh. I love it when we can all enjoy that old school salon feeling again.
