As warm temperatures approach, beaches, outdoor pools, amusement parks, community festivities and much more tend to stir up an attraction for us to venture out and enjoy. We typically wear lighter clothing to keep cool during the summer exposing our skin.
Protecting our skin from the sun is very important. Wearing sunscreen helps protect us from ultraviolet radiation. It helps prevent sunburn as well and reduces the risk of skin cancer. Prolonged sun exposure could also lead to premature aging. It’s important to apply sunscreen to children as well, as their skin is delicate and vulnerable to sun damage.
It’s noted that even when it’s cloudy outside eighty percent of ultraviolet light passes through clouds, so applying sunscreen is advised.
Invest in choosing the right sunscreen. It’s advised to look for broad sunscreen protection (UVA/UVB), SPF 30 or higher. Also, consider your skin type. For example, cream for dry skin, gel for oily skin or a spray can be used as well for convenience.
Sunscreen should be applied every two hours especially when exposed to direct sunlight. The intensity of UV rays varies throughout the day with peak hours between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm, so reapply sunscreen accordingly.
Tanning will typically take a little longer while wearing sunscreen, however, it’s important to protect your skin from harmful UV radiation.
TIPS: Don’t apply sunscreen and insect repellant. Apply each separately as they require different methods. Be careful not to expose your sunscreen to heat. It can cause the formula to separate and become ineffective. Expired sunscreen won’t be as effective. If you notice a change in consistency such as it’s become more watery or clumpy or notice a change in smell or color, it’s time to replace the product.
Remember to pack your sunscreen and have a wonderful and safe summer!
