On-camera personality and SHEEN Correspondent, Alex Jackson is a woman that means business. In a space where some influencers are paid significantly higher than Black influencers, Jackson decided enough was enough and made it her mission to help Black influencers secure their bag. We caught up with Jackson to discuss how the ongoing pandemic became her blessing in disguise, the launch of Media Girls LA, and much more in our exclusive interview.

What inspired the launch of your company, Media Girls LA?

Media Girls LA originally started with several media girls but in the end, the strongest survived (laughs), which is Alex Jackson. It really all started with a media brunch in 2017 in Los Angeles and kind of grew after that. After the first brunch, I realized that I could do so much more with this company. My partner and I decided to part ways after we did our first event. I then took the brand to the next level and actually got a vision of what I wanted MGL to be.

Why would you say you are passionate about helping influencers of color?

At the time when I had just started doing influencer marketing, I was friends with a guy that worked for a popular clothing line. He would tell me and my other friend how much the girls were getting paid. I noticed that the white influencers were getting paid significantly higher than the Black influencers. Those same Black influencers that either had the same number of followers or were bigger were getting paid less. Then I just would hear it among other Black influencers that work with agencies. I definitely saw the pattern. That’s when I made the decision to focus on people that looked like me and made sure they were getting what they deserve when it comes to pay.

As a content creator, how did COVID affect you personally?

Personally, I had the biggest personal growth as a person in 2020. I got to know myself in a whole different way, I faced my past trauma. Personally, 2020 was a blessing in disguise for me.

How were you able to strategize differently during this time to help yourself as well as others?

I really started to think outside the box. It was like a whole new hustle in me came out during the pandemic that I didn’t know was in me, being that I made the most money in a pandemic than I did before as an entrepreneur. I think I was on survival mode honestly, even though I wasn’t broke. I never want to go back to that place. So, the hustle in me went into overdrive. I started a different strategy of picking influencers I would recruit, I started curating events virtually, and putting out eBooks and webinars.

What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see from you in the future?

I am putting out an E-Book on how to obtain brand deals next month. I have a t-shirt company called Statementtees which can be found on Instagram.

I plan on doubling my numbers in brand deals this year, which I feel is obtainable, being that I have obtained 50k in brand deals already and its only February.
