Osaka won her fourth grand slam title at the age of 23. Last weekend she claimed her second Australian Open title with a victory over Jennifer Brady. She’s always fascinating to watch. Her skill is amazing and she’s always so humble.

The young champ was once a citizen of both the US and Japan having been born to a Haitian father –who moved to the United States for school– and a Japanese mother. Osaka renounced her US citizenship in 2019, possibly to compete as a Japanese tennis player in the Tokyo Olympics because Japanese laws do not recognize dual citizenship. If I’m being honest, it doesn’t matter what country she plays for. In the words of my girl Issa, “I’m rooting for everybody black.”
