Showtime’s critically acclaimed series, The Chi features a young actor who has left viewers speechless for his incredible talent on-screen. Actor, Michael V. Epps appears on screen portraying Jake Taylor on the hit series and it’s clear that the skills flow naturally. Just following the 2021 BET Awards last week, we wanted to sit down with the young star to discuss his roles on television so far, his big nomination at the annual award show, and much more!

Tell us about your experience on the hit series, The Chi.

It’s really been a great experience. I just started but this is my first big project in the acting world. I was so blessed. I got great cast mates, the chemistry we have on set is amazing. We’re able to do our thing on camera because it seems like we’re really family. It’s like we really grew up with each other.

You were nominated for a 2021 BET Award – what does this accomplishment mean to you?

Man, it means a lot. Growing up, I used to watch the BET Awards with my mom and grandma. I never saw myself being on BET in that light but when I found out, I just thought it was crazy. I went from just watching it to being a part of it. I was super excited.

How was your experience guest starring on Chicago Fire?

I had a great experience. When I got there, they welcomed me with open arms. They were real cool. It was a fun time on set. In the end, we got together for a family photo. In this experience, it was similar to The Chi because it felt so natural and easy to connect with them on camera.

How would you describe being a creative during this time of COVID-19?

I don’t want to say that it didn’t change much for me, because I’ve always been a homebody. I’ve always stayed in the house. I can say that it messed up this season [season four] of The Chi. It made everything kind of feel off. I had to change the way I was living, I had to wear a mask every time I leave the house. Sometimes I forget the mask, got to run back into the house to get it, it’s crazy but we’re all going through this together. COVID really changed a lot.

What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see from you in the rest of 2021?

Right now, I’m currently working on getting my clothing line up and going. We’re spreading it across the world. My mom and I have a book in the works. I’m just doing my thing, we just wrapped season four so hopefully I get more opportunities!
