Award-winning actress Viola Davis plays former First Lady Michelle Obama in Showtime’s new anthology and she is astounding. According to Variety, The First Lady follows three legendary White House matriarchs behind closed doors, their personal and political battles, and how they negotiated their “controversial” contributions to the country.

In a press statement, Jana Winograde, president of entertainment at Showtime Networks Inc., said, “Throughout our history, presidents’ spouses have wielded remarkable influence, not only on the nation’s leaders but on the country itself.”

“I don’t want to look back in four years and wonder, ‘What did I become living in that house?'” Davis muses on Fagbenle’s lap in the two-minute video. As Mrs. Roosevelt reminds FDR, “You are the husband of a wife who has a mind and a life of her own,” and Betty Ford stresses to her husband, “I will be here for you, but I’m going to be myself.” The trailer presents the first women as confident ladies who stand their ground.

Michelle Pfeiffer stars as Betty Ford, Aaron Eckhart plays Gerald Ford, Gillian Anderson plays Eleanor Roosevelt, and Kiefer Sutherland plays Franklin D. Roosevelt in the drama series. Former President Barack Obama is played by O-T Fagbenle of The Handmaid’s Tale.

The 10-part anthology will premiere on April 17th.
