So, it was perfect for Sheen Magazine to take this opportunity to speak with Jana Dukes. A Beautiful lady with so many accomplishments and has recently published her second book.
What a great opportunity to get to know the person behind the writer of a book you might be currently reading or considering buying. Sheen Readers, let me introduce you to Jana Dukes!
My name is Jana Dukes. I have been happily married to Steven Dukes for almost 8 years this July. I am a worship pastor, math teacher, author, and the founder of Her Refuge LLC. I am so blessed to have a loving extended family and friends who are like family. I love spending time with family & friends. I enjoy reading, biking, making DIY body butter and shampoos, and watching movies. My favorite movies & shows are about sci-fi mystery. But, of course, as an educator, I love “Abbott Elementary.”
So, Congratulations this is your second book? Tell us about both of them what inspired you and the message you want to convey?
This is my second book. I self-published my first book in 2021. It is titled I Am: A Practical Guide for Every Girl to Find Their True Identity in Christ.
My goal is to create a 3-part series that focuses on social-emotional learning with a biblical basis. I have one more book to go.
We Are: A Practical Guide for Every Girl to Develop & Maintain Healthy Relationships is all about how to navigate the beautiful journey of relationships. God made us to be relational beings. But sometimes it can be hard to navigate the complexities of relationships. My goal is to equip teen girls with tools and biblical truths that can help them have thriving relationships with their self, peers, parents, mentors, teachers, & God.
The biggest message is that God knows we are not perfect, so He gave us a guide on how to have thriving relationships. So, through biblical truths, personal examples, and applications each girl will discover how to navigate their relationships.
Some topics covered are:
Forgiveness
Setting Healthy Boundaries
Conflict Resolution
Acceptance
Sexual Purity
Friendship
It’s amazing you have a heart for our youth at such a time as this and enjoy what you do.
As a 12+ year math educator, I have always enjoyed building relationships with my students. For most of my career, part of my task was running a social-emotional learning course for my classroom. The curriculum was amazing and super well-written. However, because of the secular environment, there were many biblical truths that were overlooked or ignored. I knew that there was a need for churches, youth groups, Christian schools, and organizations to have materials to help their students learn how to navigate the ebbs and flows of adolescence while growing deeper in their relationship with God. So, I created a resource that they can use. It is my way of giving back. I truly was positively impacted by the mentors, teachers, and pastors in my village after my father passed away when I was at a young age, and I wanted to find a way to give back.
With you being involved in the church and a schoolteacher, I’m sure it’s so much you witness. Any encouragement you can offer?
Always remember Who and Whose you are. You are loved, chosen, fearless, a masterpiece, and enough. As you navigate life and relationships, always remember to give yourself grace. No one expects you to be perfect. Always treat your mistakes as lessons. Always remember that Jesus loves you so much and knows that you need help navigating life. He never expected you to do it alone. That is why he gave us the Bible as a blueprint and gave us parents, mentors, family, and friends to walk with us along the ride.
You got this! Never give up.
