How has your story motivated you on days when there seems to be nothing to keep you going?

I acknowledge that all I am and aspire to be is a gift from God. It is my divine calling to pursue my path. My outlook on life differs from many, as I actively seek God’s presence even in the most challenging situations. I firmly believe there is always a bright side, and God often shows His presence in the most unexpected and seemingly chaotic moments.

In what ways, if any, did you have to pivot to ensure your vision was well executed?

When I initially launched what would later become CheMinistry, a relationship platform turned TV show, I was the creative force behind the project but preferred to remain behind the scenes. I wasn’t comfortable being the public face of the endeavor. Instead, I enlisted the help of my cousin, a talented actress, and a close friend who had authored a book on relationships to take on the roles of the face and personality of CheMinistry. Public speaking wasn’t my forte.

However, when I brought on a publicist, she made it clear that she would only represent me if I stepped into the forefront of the brand. This was a pivotal moment for me. Despite my fears about articulating my thoughts effectively, she encouraged me to embrace this role. This push led to the establishment of Chanel Nicole Scott as the creator of CheMinistry.

How do you showcase the empowerment of Women’s History Month every day?

I collaborate with a group of accomplished Black women entrepreneurs to drive the operations of my business. Each team member is a skilled business owner in her own right, coming together to form a formidable collective. Together, we are a powerful force shaping history, pooling our expertise, skills, and techniques to propel the success of CheMinistry.

Who are some lesser-known female entrepreneurs from history that you admire and believe deserve more recognition?

Inspired by Brownie Wise, a self-made woman with an exceptional talent for marketing products and a natural gift for motivating others, I recognize her as a role model for numerous women and a forward-thinking business leader of her time. Wise was a pioneering figure who revolutionized Tupperware’s marketing and sales strategies, playing a pivotal role in the brand’s surge in popularity through the innovative concept of Tupperware parties. In an era when female executives were a rarity, Wise’s achievements stood out prominently. As the company expanded, she made appearances on talk shows, garnered attention in newspapers, and graced the covers of various magazines, notably becoming the first woman featured on the cover of Business Week. At times, we may believe that we need to create a significant impact to gain recognition for our efforts, but success is a gradual process. Small achievements pave the way for significant accomplishments. Brownie Wise, a female executive, created history simply through her innovation and innate ability to inspire and connect with others.

The story of Madam C.J. Walker deeply inspires me. As an African American entrepreneur, she etched her name in history as one of the pioneering female self-made millionaires in the United States, thanks to her groundbreaking line of beauty and hair care products designed specifically for Black women. Her unwavering resolve to persist and never surrender in the face of challenges is nothing short of extraordinary. Despite encountering numerous obstacles along her journey to success, she exemplified resilience and achieved monumental feats.

Madam C.J. Walker transcended the realm of entrepreneurship; she was a philanthropist, a fiery political activist, and a dedicated social advocate. Her legacy endures, with her being hailed as the wealthiest African American businesswoman and the most affluent self-made woman in America when she passed in 1919. Walker’s multifaceted impact on business, society, and advocacy serves as a beacon of inspiration and empowerment for generations to come.

These two entrepreneurs made significant contributions to their respective industries and deserve recognition for their achievements.

Reflecting on your own experiences, what are some effective ways that male allies have supported you in your career journey?

I have been fortunate to have an incredible male business partner who shares my passion, if not exceeds it, for promoting and advocating for healthy relationships. In moments when I may not be at my best, he steps in seamlessly to ensure that we maintain our top-tier performance. Both are visionaries in our approaches, and we mutually hold each other accountable. Through collaboration, we devise strategies to maximize our outreach, whether through co-authoring books, co-hosting a TV show, or embarking on our latest project – creating a relationship card game designed to help individuals navigate past pain and trauma within romantic relationships.

How do you strike a balance between ambition and self-care as a woman in a demanding business environment?

Work doesn’t feel like a chore for me—it’s something I genuinely enjoy. However, I recognize the importance of taking breaks to maintain a clear mind and conduct a mental check-in, ensuring I can continue performing at a high level upon my return. I prioritize self-awareness and stay attuned to my body’s signals, knowing when it’s time to pause and recharge. Treating myself and occasionally rewarding myself for a job well done are integral parts of my self-care routine.
