How has your story motivated you on days when there seems to be nothing to keep you going?

My journey from corporate success to entrepreneurship to navigating the financial adversities of building Say Yes To Profits fuels my motivation on challenging days. When I encounter moments of doubt, I reflect on how I started with just a laptop, a busted printer, and modest savings yet managed to turn my passion into a million-dollar CFO and accounting firm. The memory of facing foreclosure and repossession serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination that brought me through those tough times.

Moreover, my transformation from nearly losing everything to leading a company that helps clients achieve astounding growth rates—reaffirms my belief in overcoming obstacles. Seeing my clients thrive, especially during difficult times like the COVID-19 pandemic, reminds me of the impact I have and strengthens my resolve. Knowing that over 90% of my clients experience significant growth within a year keeps me focused and motivated to continue sharing my knowledge and expertise.

Lastly, the recognition and features in prestigious publications like Forbes validate my journey and expertise. Being recognized as a top accountant and an award-winning author and speaker further motivates me to push through challenges and continue making a difference in the lives of other female entrepreneurs.

In what ways, if any, did you have to pivot to ensure your vision was well executed?

In my shift from the corporate world to entrepreneurship, embracing pivoting wasn’t merely optional but imperative to successfully execute my vision. Transitioning from an employee to a business owner required a significant shift in mindset and approach. I had to adapt quickly, utilizing my financial expertise to navigate challenges and make strategic decisions that propel Say Yes To Profits forward.

One of the critical pivots was embracing a more flexible and agile business model. I realized that in order to provide cutting-edge financial management support to small businesses, I needed to be adaptable and responsive to changing market needs. This meant constantly evaluating and adjusting our services and strategies to stay ahead of the curve and meet the evolving demands of our clients.

Additionally, I had to pivot my role and responsibilities within the company. As the founder, I initially wore many hats and was heavily involved in day-to-day operations. However, to scale and grow Say Yes To Profits effectively, I had to delegate tasks, empower my team, and focus on high-impact activities such as strategic planning, business development, and thought leadership. This shift allowed us to leverage collective expertise and resources more efficiently, ultimately driving the success and impact of our firm.

How do you showcase the empowerment of Women’s History Month every day?

Every day, I showcase the empowerment of Women’s History Month through my actions, mindset, and advocacy. As a female entrepreneur who has overcome significant challenges and achieved success in the financial and business world, I embody the spirit of empowerment by leading with resilience, determination, and a commitment to supporting other women on their journeys.

One way I showcase empowerment is by serving as a mentor and role model to aspiring female entrepreneurs. I actively engage in mentorship programs, workshops, and speaking engagements to share my experiences, insights, struggles, and strategies for success. By sharing my story and expertise, I inspire and empower other women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams, navigate challenges, and achieve their goals.

Additionally, I use my platform and influence to advocate for gender equality, diversity, and inclusion in the business community. Through my work, I promote opportunities for women to thrive, break barriers, and shatter glass ceilings. Whether it’s through promoting women-owned businesses, supporting initiatives that empower women economically, or speaking out on important issues, I strive to create a more inclusive and equitable environment for all women in the business world.

Who are some lesser-known female entrepreneurs from history that you admire and believe deserve more recognition?

I would describe Ebony Porter-Ike not as a “lesser-known” female entrepreneur but rather as a powerful force working behind the scenes. Ebony embodies the qualities of an entrepreneur, author, speaker, publicist, and determined businesswoman, all focused on empowering others to become their best selves. Her go-getter attitude, combined with humble confidence, has been a tremendous source of inspiration for me, encouraging me to embrace fearlessness, boldness, confidence, and assertiveness in my own entrepreneurial journey.

Reflecting on your own experiences, what are some effective ways that male allies have supported you in your career journey?

Reflecting on my own experiences, I am deeply grateful for the unwavering support and encouragement I’ve received from my husband and son. Their steadfast belief in my abilities has been a source of strength during challenging times. Whether it’s working tirelessly by my side, offering unwavering support for every task, or empowering me with their guidance, they have been my pillars of strength throughout my journey. How do you strike a balance between ambition and self-care as a woman in a demanding business environment?

Striking a balance between ambition and self-care as a woman in a demanding business environment has been a crucial aspect of my journey. It’s essential to recognize that ambition fuels drive and determination, propelling me to achieve my goals and make a meaningful impact in my industry. However, I’ve also learned that prioritizing self-care is equally important for long-term success and well-being.

One effective way I strike this balance is by setting clear boundaries and priorities. I’ve learned to delegate tasks, say no to non-essential commitments, and prioritize activities that align with my goals and values. This allows me to focus my energy and attention on what truly matters, both professionally and personally, while avoiding burnout and overwhelm.

Additionally, practicing self-care rituals has been instrumental in maintaining my physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Whether it’s taking breaks throughout the day to recharge, engaging in regular exercise, prioritizing quality sleep, or spending time with loved ones, these self-care practices rejuvenate me and ensure I’m operating at my best. By valuing self-care as much as ambition, I’ve found a harmonious balance that enables me to thrive in a demanding business environment while prioritizing my overall health and happiness.
