How has your story motivated you on days when there seems to be nothing to keep you going?
My three sons. They are both my mirror and my compass. I am so grateful that I have had the opportunity to raise them and see them grow into successful young men, even though I have done it without the benefit of a partner. It is a reminder of the power of community and my responsibility to give back based on how much was given to us.
In what ways, if any, did you have to pivot to ensure your vision was well executed?
Listening is so important. So often in these spaces, we are asked to talk to people–when we should actually be talking with them.  Professionally, I had to learn how to prioritize and delegate, even when my instincts told me to hold on to everything at once.
How do you showcase the empowerment of Women’s History Month every day?
I believe that Black women in particular, hold up the world. I am constantly looking for ways to elevate our voices.
Who are some lesser-known female entrepreneurs from history that you admire and believe deserve more recognition?
Trisha Bailey. She is an entrepreneur who faced abuse and poverty before becoming the richest Jamaican-born woman. In her memoir, “Unbroken,” she tells how maintaining grace in the face of trauma launched her to unimaginable wealth and joy.
Reflecting on your own experiences, what are some effective ways that male allies have supported you in your career journey?
Give space for women when there seems to be none. By men opening doors and then stepping aside, I have been honored to demonstrate my value in spaces where I otherwise would not have been invited.
How do you strike a balance between ambition and self-care as a woman in a demanding business environment?
My mentor, Susan L. Taylor reminds me often, “Give yourself to yourself before you give yourself away.” I have a beautiful circle of family and friends who remind me who I am and allow me to truly relax. I also prioritize self-care by taking time for myself as seriously as I would a board meeting or speaking engagement.
