Grammy award-winning artist Ciara is taking her musical talents to the big screen! The “Promise” singer has joined the cast of The Color Purple, which is set to be released on December 20, 2023. Entertainment Weeklyreports that Ciara will play Nettie, the adult version of Halle Bailey’s character.

The musical stage production, produced by Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg, enlisted the singer after a highly successful pop career with several acting credits. Some of Ciara’s roles include MTV’s All You’ve Got,Mama, I Want to Sing! and That’s My Boy.

This version of The Color Purple, set to begin filming this month, follows Alice Walker’s 1982 novel. American Idol star, Fantasia Barrino, will play Celie, who navigates Southern life in the early 1900s. The cast is star-studded and includes Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Colman Domingo as Mister, Corey Hawkins as Harpo, H.E.R as Squeak, Louis Gossett Jr. as Ol’ Mister, and David Alan Grier as Reverend Avery.
