Dr. Carson currently serves as the Chair of the U.S. Advisory Council on Trafficking. A three-time recipient of the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Awards, presented by the last three residing presidents, she has been recognized by esteemed organizations for her tireless dedication and leadership. Her unwavering commitment to justice, her exceptional business acumen, and her profound impact on the lives of survivors and communities make her a highly respected and sought-after speaker and advocate. Dr. Carson plays a pivotal role in shaping policies and strategies to combat trafficking and provide support to survivors.

In addition to her groundbreaking work in anti-trafficking efforts, Dr. Carson has a proven track record of helping nonprofits thrive through innovative social enterprise models. She has successfully launched and managed multiple businesses that not only generate revenue but also serve as platforms to support and empower survivors of exploitation. Sheen had the opportunity to chat with Dr. Carson and catch her vision for 2024.

Sheen: Please introduce yourself and your organization to the reading audience.

 

Dr. Carson: I am Dr. Marlene Carson,  C.E.O. of Black Leaders Against Sex Trafficking, Chair of The U.S. Advisory Council on Trafficking, Social Entrepreneur Strategist, and Serial Entrepreneur.

Sheen: Why are you so passionate about helping women out of sex trafficking?

Dr. Carson: My unwavering passion for rescuing survivors of sex trafficking is deeply rooted in my own journey as a survivor of Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking. I have firsthand knowledge of the trials and tribulations faced by women and girls who have been ensnared by this horrific reality. I am resolute in my mission to impart knowledge, raise awareness, and ignite the spark of change within as many hearts as possible.

My purpose is twofold: to equip communities with the tools to prevent trafficking, and to empower victims and survivors to reclaim their lives. I want to be a beacon of hope, guiding them towards a future filled with the promise of their dreams. I aim to inspire all those who yearn for a world free from the shackles of exploitation.

Through education, empowerment, and inspiration, we can collectively combat the darkness of sex trafficking and pave the way for a brighter, more compassionate world. Together, we can be the architects of transformation, fostering a society where dreams are not only pursued but achieved.

How are you planning to finish 2023 strong?

Dr. Carson: I plan on exposing the plight of BIPOC Women and girls, Black, Indigenous, People of Color releasing program that will inspire the church, empower social entrepreneurs, and activate black men who want to stand up against sex trafficking. 

What is the one mantra that you live by?

Dr. Carson: I live with purpose, inspiring change and building a future free from the chains of exploitation
