Each gala will center around a new exhibition from The Costume Institue. The first will open in the Anna Wintour Costume Center on September 18th, 2021 and is called “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.” It is built around a fictional American house.
The press release reports that each room of the house will feature examples of the 20th and 21st century fashion that reflect “the customs and behaviors of the imagined occupants” while focusing on a different emotion. A dilm by director Melina Matsoukas will be shown in the galleries.
The second exhibition will be titled “In America: An Anthology of Fashion.” It is slated to open in the American Wing period rooms on May 5th, 2022.
The press release states that the display will feature “women’s and men’s historical and contemporary dress dating from the 18th century to the present in vignettes installed in select period rooms.”
Both exhbitions will run until September 5th, 2022. Mark your calendars!
