American lawyer, Thurgood Marshall was born on July 2nd, 1908.

Thurgood always loved listening to cases at the local courthouse.

He attended Baltimore’s Colored High and Training School where he was a star member of the debate team there. Marshall was a bit of a troublemaker growing up, he notes that his greatest high school accomplishment was memorizing the entire United States Constitution, this was his punishment for misbehaving in class.

Upon completing college at Lincoln University, Marshall went onto apply at the University of Maryland Law School. Unforuantely, he was rejected because of his race. He later attended law school at Howard University and graduated in 1933.

Over the course of his career, he won many cases. In 1940, he successfully defended four black men who were convicted of murder in the Chambers vs. Florida case.

It was in 1967 when Thurgood Marshall was nominated to serve on the Supreme Court Justice bench. He was sworn in on October 2nd, 1967 and became the first African American to serve on the nation’s highest court. Marshall spent 24 years on the court and retired in 1991.

Thurgood Marshall passed away at 84-years-old on January 24th, 1993.
