Lawrence “LAW” Watford has established himself as a proficient independent filmmaker, skillfully delving into the intricacies of humanity across various subjects. Hailing from Brooklyn, Watford’s portfolio comprises diverse short films offering valuable insights into contemporary life, love, and humanity – navigating through social relationships and evolving cultural norms with sincerity and honesty. Despite addressing complex and occasionally challenging themes, Watford’s storytelling resonates with audiences, providing not just entertainment but also fresh perspectives on life.

Acknowledged as “One of 7 Independent Black Filmmakers to Watch” by Essence magazine in 2021, Watford gears up for an eventful 2024. Leading his lineup is “The Seminarian: Martin Luther King Jr. Comes of Age,” based on Patrick Parr’s 2018 book. This project sheds light on Dr. King’s lesser-explored educational journey at Crozier Theological Seminary in 1949, unraveling his formative years and motivations for studying divinity.

Passionate about this intriguing topic, Watford and his production company, Divine Write Pictures, secured the rights to Parr’s book in 2021, embarking on its transformation into a limited series.

Alongside “The Seminarian,” Watford presents “Shadow Acting,” a compelling short film set to grace film festivals nationwide in the winter and spring of 2024. Completed in the summer of 2023, the film delves into interpersonal relationships, dissecting the challenges of modern-day love amidst conflicting social, traditional, and cultural norms.

Later in the year, audiences can anticipate “Your Guide Home,” a documentary offering a closer look into the life of Coprice Jones, the compassionate CEO and founder of Serenity Services, providing hospice and end-of-life care in the Chicago area. Known as “The Death Doula,” Jones’ story promises to be both moving and enlightening.

Watford extends his creative reach by collaborating on an HBCU (Historic Black College Universities) TV series with partners Jack Manning III and Tiffany Elle Burgess at Tyler Street Films.

With roots tracing back to his studies at Hampton University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science, Watford’s journey includes collaborations with notable figures like Pat Morita and James Avery. Post-graduation, he contributed to various productions, including “Revolutionary Road” and “The Good Shepherd” directed by Robert DeNiro, followed by a five-season stint in the art department of “Law & Order: SVU.”

While supporting others in their film and TV endeavors, Watford continues to develop his own projects, such as the 2013 short film “The Savior & The Samaritan” and the 2018 production “Flipped.” Notably, his recent work, “Catharsis,” examining accountability in law enforcement, garnered attention at several festivals and secured acquisition by Revolt TV.
