The Black Archives, History and Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. proudly hosts the annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities Conference (HBCUCon), a celebration of culture, legacy, and community that brings together alumni and supporters from across the nation. Scheduled to take place from January 10 to January 12, 2024, HBCUCon is a multi-disciplinary festival and conference that promises a unique experience curated with a blend of music, art, food, networking, laughter, and engaging dialogue.
Event Highlights:
HBCU Homecomings: The Journey to the Yard (January 10, 2024): The conference kicks off with the screening of the 2-part docu-series, offering a first-hand look into the unique traditions of attending Historically Black Colleges & Universities. The movie starts at 7 pm, and tickets are available at HBCUHomecomings2024.eventbrite.com.
The Conversation (January 11, 2024): A day dedicated to thought-provoking discussions on crucial topics such as health and wellness, gun violence, social justice, technology, entrepreneurship, and activism. Leaders will engage in interactive sessions, fostering actionable items for positive change.
The Block Party (January 12, 2024): The Lyric Plaza will come alive with the cultural celebration known as The Block Party. Set to the sounds curated by DJ Bo-Weezy, the festivities begin at 6 pm and feature food trucks, fun, friendly rivalry, and set to the HBCU soundtrack. In its inaugural year, HBCUCon filmed the hit award show, HBCU Honors, featuring luminaries like Oprah Winfrey, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Steven A. Smith, and others. The show is currently streaming, honoring the excellence and achievements of HBCU alumni.

About the Black Archives, History and Research Foundation of South Florida:
The Black Archives History and Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc. was founded in 1977 by Dr. Dorothy Jenkins Fields as a non-profit organization to collect and preserve the rapidly vanishing material that reflects the African American experience in Miami-Dade County. Over the years, the collection has grown, and the Black Archives is now a national resource for this history of the 19th and 20th centuries, providing a rich repository of materials that are used by scholars, students, teachers, the media and the community alike.
A 400-seat theater and multifaceted facility featuring high-quality performances. It is the lone survivor of the district once known as “Little Broadway,” which flourished in Overtown for almost 50 years. The theater served as a movie and vaudeville venue, and showcased more than 150 performers, including Aretha Franklin, Count Basie, B.B. King, Redd Foxx and Ella Fitzgerald.
