She’s a mother, attorney, and entrepreneur all bundled into one, but when it comes to the world of all things , we’re confident she knows what she’s talking about! In addition to being the owner of Maggie Rose Salon, this naturalista founded a vegan and eco-counscious line, Naturally Drenched that is currently the talk of the hair world. We caught up with Powell recently to discuss the inspiration behind the brand and obtained her best advice for aspiring single mothers with a vision in entrepreneurship.

Tell us what intrigued you about hair that made you want to step into the hair industry?

Well, I have to be honest, the reason why I even got into the beauty industry was because of my daughter. Honestly, I’m not the most fashionable person, even though I may be, but I might not know it (laughs). I change my hair a lot. I am a mother, and I am a federal employee, I work for the government. Everyone has this misconception that attorneys make a lot of money and I don’t (laughs). When I had my daughter, I decided I wanted to have a second stream of income and that was why I got into the beauty world. I went into owning a salon. I’ve been doing that for about eight years now. Pretty much all we do is specialize in curls. We do cur cuts, color, and I really have a passion for curls in general. I love them and love knowing about them. I think when I started my natural hair journey, I really didn’t know what to do with my hair. It took me a long time to learn it and understand that the health of the hair is what is most important in making it work.

What inspired the creation of Naturally Drenched?

I call myself a serial entrepreneur. I had an idea about Naturally Drenched about two years ago. I was holding onto the name for a while. It just so happened that when the salon shut down, it gave me the time to kick off the haircare line. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. COVID gave me downtime to look into it, find the proper team, the chemist – who I love. I work with her to formulate Rebalance. It gave me time to research and not rush through a process.

Do you have a favorite product from your line? If so, what is it and why?

I honestly love Rebalance. That is my hero product. I love it. I love it because it works. I like to say that it’s not just a pretty bottle, because the packaging is amazing. I love it because it actually works on all textures, in different situations, and adjusts the health of the hair. I’m not just relaying on the pretty packaging; I am relaying on the science of the product. That’s what makes it amazing. I love that it works on all textures. I have a higher texture hair, so I love that it works just as well on me as it does with someone who’s curls aren’t as tight.

What advice to you have for single mothers that are entrepreneurs during this time of the pandemic?

I would just say, keep going and stay true to your vision. That’s the best thing ever. A lot of times, we lose sight of our vision and we have so many people that want to help. Sometimes, you can be steered away from your vision. I found that [especially during COVID] sticking to my vision and seeing it through has been my best guidance.

What are you currently working on and what can we expect to see from you and Naturally Drenched in 2021?

Well, it’s so funny that you ask that (laughs). I am actually back in the lab with my chemist. We’re working on a series of products. Right now, I’m focusing on two other treatments and non-protein mask and a protein mask. I’ll be in research and development for that this year. The main thing for 2021 is to get the word out about Naturally Drenched and the great tools we have on our website. That’s my main goal this year. I want to prove that Naturally Drenched is a haircare line that is really committed to healthy hair. We should be a staple in everyone’s bathroom and everyone’s salon.
