Olivia Rodrigo is quickly proving herself to be one of the biggest female artists of this generation, and fans can’t get enough. Boasting 32 million followers on Instagram alone, the singer-songwriter first garnered recognition from her lead acting roles on Disney’s Bizaardvark and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. And she’s only 20 years old!

On Thursday, June 29th, Olivia premiered her highly-anticipated new single titled “vampire” at the Youtube headquarters in Los Angeles. The dress code? “Killer, come as you are!” The in-person event was paired with a livestream, as she premiered the song’s cinematic visual to audiences all around the world.

The song itself touches on the reality of being in a toxic relationship, one that drains your life force like a vampire would. Speaking on the inspiration, Olivia states, “I was upset about a certain situation and went to the studio alone and sat down at the grand piano, and the chords and melody and lyrics just poured out of me — almost like an out-of-body experience. It’s a song about feeling confused and hurt, and at first I thought it was meant to be a piano ballad. But when Dan and I started working on it, we juxtaposed the lyrics with these big drums and crazy tempo changes. So now it’s like a heartbreak song you can dance to.”
“vampire” serves as the lead single from her forthcoming album titled GUTS, which is slated to arrive on September 8th. This serves as the follow-up to her critically-acclaimed debut album, SOUR.
