Skin Beauty Bar located in Washington, DC was founded in 2004 focusing on self-care and beauty treatments. The founder and master esthetician Meka Mathis is the lead esthetician and a graduate of the Parsons School of Design.
She has integrated her Design Marketing degree and esthetics degree by running a successful beauty business. Skin Beauty Bar is the destination space for all self-care needs. With National Self-Care Day approaching we had the opportunity to speak with Meka to get tips on self-care and learn more about the success of her business.

Why do you feel self-care is so important?

Meka: Self-care is important because it allows an individual to decompress. Those that indulge in self-care have more of a life balance and an overall positive outlook on life. This results in those people being more effective in their workspace as well as their overall well-being.

Can you give us three self-care tips for women?

Meka: Three tips on how a woman can practice self-care are:

  1. Taking time out once a month for a facial or personal care service.
  2. Take a walk or hike by yourself to reflect on the things you’re grateful for.
  3. Understanding that it is okay to say “no” to anyone that is not worthy of your time.

What is your definition of success for your company?

Meka: For me, success is defined by those acknowledging my business as an innovator in skincare needs in Washington, DC. This success is evident with the continued years in business.

What is your proudest accomplishment in business?

Meka:  My proudest business accomplishment is purchasing and funding my business myself without any help.

Do you have any advice for aspiring and new entrepreneurs?
