(Atlanta, GA) August 31, 2023 – Author, Speaker and Mental Health Expert, Bernard Owens, Jr. will join the TEDxBuckheadAve team as a featured speaker for its inaugural TEDx event. This public event will take place on September 16, 2023 at MODEx Studio in Atlanta, GA from 9:30am-4:00pm. The theme for this year’s event is “Immerse Yourself” and promises audiences the opportunity to “journey inside the minds of our brilliant innovators and witness their talks unfold in front of a curved 60 foot-wide IMAX-like video canvas. Speakers will leverage virtual worlds and augmented reality as their dramatic theatrical backdrop – sharing stories of immersion in a big idea, a pivot, the unexpected, what matters, etc.”

TED stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. TEDx events are an extension of TED, granted to local communities and “created in the spirit of TED’s overall mission to research and discover “ideas worth spreading.” According to TED.com, “these events are organized by passionate individuals who seek to uncover new ideas and to share the latest research in their local areas that spark conversations in their communities.”

2023 TEDxBuckheadAve Speaker, Bernard Owens Jr. is an author, inspirational speaker + mental wellness coach who has dedicated his life to helping people unlock their true potential. As a CPSS (Certified Peer Support Specialist) and QMHP (Qualified Mental Health Professional) for the State of Virginia, Bernard has nearly a decade of experience working in community mental health within marginalized communities. His latest work, “The Only Thing Wrong With You, Is That You Think Something’s Wrong With You” serves the reader as a hard hitting personal account of his triumph over adversity and a roadmap for achieving greater personal happiness + life transformation from lessons learned along his journey.

When asked about what this opportunity means to him, Owens said “Everyday, I have the privilege of helping clients one-on-one in the Mental Health and Community Mental Health arena’s. The TEDx stage is a powerful platform and a phenomenal opportunity to spread my message to a wider audience and help people on a larger scale. My mission is to provide people with a sense of hope and leave them inspired to keep going, one day at a time.”

Owen’s personal and professional mission is to teach people practical steps to reinvent themselves and embrace their past “mistakes” by using proven clinical techniques. He approaches difficult topics with sensitivity and openly shares his own past mental health experiences of depression and suicidal ideations in order to help them integrate the wisdom gained through adversity to start anew.

“I hope to foster greater empathy and greater understanding amongst TEDx audiences by imparting messages that will trickle down to families, friends and communities”

About TED
TED is on a mission to discover and spread ideas that spark imagination, embrace possibility and catalyze impact. Our organization is devoted to curiosity, reason, wonder and the pursuit of knowledge — without an agenda. We welcome people from every discipline and culture who seek a deeper understanding of the world and connection with others, and we invite everyone to engage with ideas and activate them in your community.

TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, but today it spans a multitude of worldwide communities and initiatives exploring everything from science and business to education, arts and global issues. In addition to the hundreds of TED Talks curated from our annual conferences and published on TED.com, we produce original podcasts, short video series, animated educational lessons (TED-Ed)  and TV programs that are translated into more than 100 languages and distributed via partnerships around the world. Each year, more than 3,000 independently run TEDx events bring people together to share ideas and bridge divides in communities on every continent. Through the Audacious Project, TED has helped catalyze more than $3 billion in funding for projects that seek to make the world more beautiful, sustainable and just. In 2020, TED launched Countdown, an initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis and mobilize a movement for a net-zero future.
