“One thing I try very hard to do is to show them the right type of love. I never want them to search for the wrong type of love, so I know that comes from home and it comes from me, so I always try to do that for my children.”

-Lizzy Mathis

The First Inaugural Mom Honors was a celebration of extraordinary mothers making indelible marks within the industry. Singer-songwriter Alex Isley, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, Singer-songwriter Jhene Aiko, Internet Personality Brooke Devard, Delia Batie (Mother of Andra Day) and Actress Lizzy Mathis were all presented with Teddy Bear Trophies that served as symbols of tender, love, and care that the mothers extend to their children, families, and communities.

Founded by Phylicia Fant and Markeisha Darden, the prestigious celebration highlighted the remarkable achievements of mothers in the industry, gathering influential members of both the community and the industry alongside fellow moms and friends to honor and appreciate their outstanding contributions. Going beyond being a memorable occasion, the Mom’s Honors serves as a platform to express gratitude and admiration for the incredible mothers who inspire us with their journeys and accomplishments.

The star-studded event included Whitney Alford (wife of Pulitzer-prize winning rapper Kendrick Lamar), Adrienne Banfield-Norris (mother of Jada Pinkett), Singer-songwriter Andra Day, Fashion Consultant and Entertainment Executive Eula Smith and many more.

Sheen Magazine sat down with honorees Dalia Batie, Jordin Sparks, Alex Isley, and Lizzy Mathis on the purple couch for an intimate conversation on beauty secrets, passing down generational wisdom, their greatest accomplishments of being a mother, and much more.

Owning the conversation on generational wisdom, Delia Batie (mother of Andra Day), spoke of how her mother shared God with her at an early age. “First and foremost, my mother shared with me God, a relationship with God, and my faith so that is something that I definitely passed down to my daughter Andra. I really believe that generational wisdom is rooted in faith.”

American Idol winner Jordin Sparks opened up about the power of truth and honesty. “My mom, because I’ve always been very truthful and very honest, so definitely take that from her and I instill that into my son. I also tell him to always ask questions, my mom has always encouraged me to do that. I think the other thing too is to just say yes, if you don’t have to say no, just say yes because the world is always going to have a lot of no’s to tell your kids and so I try to do that as well.”

“You know my mom, she marches to the best of her own drum, she always has. And she always just instilled in me to be myself. You know people are going to talk, someone is always going to have something to say but you have to carry who you are and hold your head high and walk in that and prune that. And I think that’s simple enough of a concept that it’s easier said than done sometimes but my mom always taught me to remain myself,” said singer Alex Isley of the generation wisdom that was passed down to her from her mother.

Another powerful, purple couch moment came when Actress Lizzy Mathis, raised by a single mom of three children, talked about influence and setting the example of what it means to be loved. “One thing I try very hard to do is to show them the right type of love. I never want them to search for the wrong type of love so I know that comes from home and it comes from me so I always try to do that for my children.”

Produced by Khalil Miles and Joi Brown, each guest received gifts sponsored by Honest, Camino by Kiva, Cantu Beauty, Doc Johnson, Icon Florals and SKN by Lori Harvey.
