Raise your hand if you are. Well, the Coronavirus has killed close to 4,300 people worldwide, according to the World Health Organization and the news makes it seems as though the town folks are scared and they are running to the store stocking up on toilet paper, hand sanitizer and water then locking themselves in their safe bubble known as home. Well, if that’s the case why was there a 30-minute wait at LongHorn Restaurant? And a long line at TSA? It is supposed to be a ghost town, right?

Well, if you’re not locking yourself in your home then you are my people. I’m not afraid, I’m just aware and very cautious. I’m not giving in to the hysteria, but I am avoiding close contact with people who are sick, if you are sick please stay home. If you must be out among the masses wear a facemask (if you can find one) otherwise, make sure you cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze or use the inside of your elbow.

Here are a few practical tips from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to protect ourselves while we are out and about living our life.

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds especially after you have been in a public place, or after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • If soap and water are not readily available, use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Cover all surfaces of your hands and rub them together until they feel dry.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.

Wait, since we are talking about death, I have a number here that is a fun fact. An estimated 300,000 people die per YEAR due to obesity. To be fair, here are a few practical tips to protect ourselves from this killer:

  • Move your body, any way you like for at least 30 mins. 3 times a week. It doesn’t have to be complicated, dance, swim, jump rope, box, etcetera, et cetera.
  • Eat more fruit and veggies. Eat at least one small salad with a meal a day, grab an apple on your way to work, again it doesn’t have to be drastic.
  • Find an accountability partner. Someone that you know will hold you accountable for some of the changes you are trying to make. It would be great if that person was someone that will go on a walk with you, go grocery shopping or just be there to help you on this journey.

The truth is coronavirus is a pandemic and it is killing people. Obesity is also killing people so be safe out there and be good to yourself.
