Many of us have experienced ups and downs throughout this Pandemic.  Enrolled Agent Shan-Nel D. Simmons speaks on the rollercoaster impact of her business and reminds us that it’s not how we start but how we finishes in hope of a brighter day.

Ms. Shan-Nel, please tell the readers about your business.

Nel Tax and Financial Solutions is a virtual full-service tax company that provides tax solutions to individuals, entrepreneurs, self-employed, healers, renters, and small to mid-size business owners nationwide in the United States with a few clients in Puerto Rico. We love to solve tax matters, and we take every business’ taxes seriously.

Being in business has its ups and downs.  Can you share what being a business owner means to you and why you became an entrepreneur in the first place?

I truly believe I was an entrepreneur all along the way. I just had to work in private sector corporate accounting and for the IRS for some years to refine my entrepreneurial spirit with the necessary business savvy that is common place regardless of your industry or profession. Becoming a business owner means you will use all parts of who you are to constantly birth your solutions, services, and products for the betterment of your community and possibly the world.

What one thing have you learned as a small business owner that has served you well over the years?

How you start is not how you have to finish – but start anyway. We entrepreneurs usually have everything we need to make our first sale right at our fingertips if we are willing to let go of how we believe it has to be. Just make it work with what you have right now. Once you make mistakes, get feedback, and/or some money by starting, you can always go back and refine what you started. But you have to start and be gentle enough with yourself to know you can always make it better later.

2020 has been a roller coaster year for many.  Hopefully 2021 will be brighter.  What’s going on with you in the upcoming year?

In 2021, Nel Tax and Financial Solutions will complete its 5th year of business. I remember how excited I was about finishing year 1 that I wrote my book, A.S.K.ing for Success: My Faith Walk from Employee to Entrepreneur, just to capture that feeling forever. But to see year 5 coming up is outstanding and a blessing. I may have to write another book, but this time about the 5-year journey. We’ll see.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?

A dream without action truly is a wish. Starting a business can be done with little steps. Every day you can do at least one thing to be one step closer to having your own business -and many of the ways to start your business can be done for free. But do know when to invest in hired help and be willing to pay the expert so you can get closer to making your dream come true faster and more accurately. And remember, if you keep track of what you paid your expert(s) while you are building your business, you are establishing startup and organizational expenses that may be tax deductible once you are open for business. But you got to start and know that you got this!
