Meet the creative entrepreneur Alexis Hodges behind organic handmade skincare brand Natural State of Mind Essentials. Alexis is not the ordinary entrepreneur having to overcome obstacles of sickness which resorted to her spending a large amount of time in hospital. Not afraid to let others know she is a survivor of Crohn’s Disease which is an inflammatory bowel disease. Refusing for this to stop her from being a statistic and rather fighting back to start a brand to help others. Also, a Biology graduate we discuss her amazing determination and courage. The inspiration behind the brand and why she refuses for co-vid 19 to get her down.

Can you tell me a bit about your brand and what inspired you to create Natural State of Mind Essentials?

In 2007 I was diagnosed with an inflammatory bowel disease called Crohn’s Disease.  From 2018 to 2019 I spent the majority of my time in hospital trying to recover from chronic flare ups. I made a promise to God that I would use my knowledge to heal other people. When I hear the words natural state of mind, it brings me back to the times when I spent my summers attending cooking and science classes at Florissant Valley College. Who knew fifteen years later the internal essence of myself would take me back to my natural state of mind.

What is your career background?

While in college I became a self-taught certified eyelash extensions specialist. In 2017 I graduated with honors with my degree in Biology. Since graduating I have trained other women how to start their businesses through one on one training courses. I have also worked for a holistic spa providing noninvasive services to help improve the body internally and externally.

Have you always wanted to be an entrepreneur?

Growing up I’ve always wanted to help others and my dream was to become a doctor. Majority of my immediate family are entrepreneurs; it was a no brainer that I would acquire this lifestyle.

Can you tell me about the products and what the brand offers?

My brand stands for creating products in the most organic state of physiology while promoting safe awareness of proper absorption. All of my products are handmade, natural fragrances and colors.

My products targets consumers with extreme dry and damaging skin. They also improve the appearance of skin with stretch marks, reduce the overproduction of pigment in the skin and help with the relieving of overactive hormones.

What has been your biggest accomplishment so far?

I would say my biggest accomplishment is graduating from college while trying to maintain my health. With this type of illness I have, I was so determined to not be a statistic to this disease.

Unfortunately, we are in the midst of a global pandemic and it has significantly impacted businesses and the economy. How has it impacted your business?

Thankfully it has not impacted my business, it has brought more awareness and increased sales.

Do you believe businesses can come back from the shattering effects of Covid-19?

Absolutely! I think that the best businesses and brands come from tragedies and uncomfortable situations. As long as we keep the mindset that this pandemic is temporary and stay focused on the future, so much success can come from this.

In these unprecedented times, how are you keeping positive during the lockdown?

I’m keeping positive during lockdown is making sure not to read too much negativity that is being posted on tv and social media. I also make sure to continue my daily routine; I think that’s the only way to not get overwhelmed with what’s going on in the world.

If you could give 3 tips to boost your well-being during this season. What would they be?

  • Keep negativity out of your life! Keep people around you that understand that the glass is always half full.
  • Get as much rest as possible. People think the pandemic has allowed them the time to stay up late at night but this is the time that we need to get well rested.
  • Use this time to broaden the mind for new activities and hobbies. Get creative with your daily routine.
