Oakland’s own J. Toney, a seasoned artist with roots deeply embedded in the city’s vibrant streets, is set to unveil his latest musical endeavor, “The Testament.” This upcoming album is not just a collection of tracks; it’s a narrative encapsulating J. Toney’s growth, paying homage to Bay Area legends, and echoing the profound influence of his Oakland roots.

Initiating his musical voyage at the tender age of 11, J. Toney draws inspiration from the trials and tribulations of growing up in the streets of East Oakland. Reflecting on his motivation, he shares, “I try to channel those experiences of the hood into my music in a way that inspires people to see a way out and keep going. Writing and creating is therapeutic to me.”
The genesis of “The Testament” traces back to a transformative trip to Negril, Jamaica. It was there, on the patio of a villa overlooking the ocean, that J. Toney found himself inspired to craft “Freshah.” Fans can anticipate a rich tapestry of storytelling, finely arranged instrumentation, and unbridled passion, promising an unforgettable listening experience.
“The Testament” is not merely an album; it’s the evolution of a dream for J. Toney. It not only showcases his growth as an artist but also pays homage to Bay Area Hip Hop legends like Too Short, E-40, and Digital Underground by reinterpreting classics. It’s a testament to his journey and the undeniable influence of his roots.
Beyond his musical accomplishments, J. Toney has made waves in the industry, landing on the 66th annual Grammy Ballot, considered for Best Rap Song and Best Melodic Rap Performance. Reflecting on this achievement, he expresses, “I imagined me being up there one day and never stopped believing I can. Fast forward almost 25 years of not giving up, and I’m a 3X Grammy considered artist.”
J. Toney’s influence extends beyond the music realm. In collaboration with his fiancée, Regina, they run the travel channel “Baecation Connect” and pursue individual business ventures, balancing love and work seamlessly.
Looking ahead to 2024, J. Toney envisions becoming a household name synonymous with love, good vibes, persistence, and hard work. From receiving a college scholarship in the first grade to bouts of homelessness, his childhood experiences have molded him into a resilient artist with an unwavering dream.
“When it’s all said and done, I want to be known for having an unstoppable dream. With a successful career, I want to be known for releasing good energy into the universe,” concludes J. Toney.
